Generative Bionics presents Gene.01, the humanoid robot with Physical AI and multisensory skin for industrial applications

Genoa, 20 July 2026 – Generative Bionics, an Italian deep tech company developing humanoid robots for industrial applications, today presents Gene.01, a fully functional and sensorized humanoid robotic platform designed to operate safely and intuitively alongside people.

Built in just six months, Gene.01 combines a distributed tactile skin to interpret and engage more effectively with the physical world and interactions with humans. Generative Bionics is already adapting the platform to its first industrial use case through a collaboration with Fincantieri dedicated to welding operations in shipyards. The company is also making the robot’s digital model available as open source, giving Physical AI developers a foundation from which to build industry-specific applications. Gene.01 will make its US debut at the AMD Advancing AI 2026 event, scheduled for 22 and 23 July 2026.

Designed for safe collaboration with people

Gene.01 is built with a people-centered approach and prioritizes collaboration over isolation. Its multimodal perception system goes beyond mere contact: the distributed tactile skin detects touch, temperature, proximity and force, helping the robot anticipate human presence and react before and during contact.

This approach makes interaction safer and more natural. Force sensitivity also makes it possible to teach the robot a task by conveying not only the movement, but also the intensity required to perform it: information that cannot be derived from video demonstrations alone, such as the force with which to grasp an object.

For Generative Bionics, design is not an aesthetic veneer but a component of intelligence and trust. The principle of “beauty, grace and safety” guides proportions, posture and movement, helping people intuitively interpret the robot’s intentions and fostering both operational effectiveness and social acceptance.

An AI designed together with the robot’s body, open to developers

Gene.01’s record production time – going from concept to physical platform in just six months – stems from Generative Bionics’ proprietary Physical AI: a physics-native approach that designs body, mechanics and motor intelligence as a single system. Instead of developing hardware and control at separate stages, the platform optimizes from the outset how the robot moves, perceives and collaborates with people. Using models of both the robot and the human partner, the architecture jointly fine-tunes hardware and motor intelligence based on measurable parameters, such as ergonomics and walking stability. The result is a robot designed for safe and efficient collaboration with people, not merely to maximize its own performance autonomously.

Gene.01’s digital twin was designed to be not only open source, but immediately accessible. It is the first humanoid robot model published and maintained in the software channels already used by Physical AI developers. With a simple installation, Gene.01 can be integrated directly into existing AI, simulation and robotics environments, allowing developers to start working on the platform right away.

A scalable industrial platform for production, from which to develop specialized robots

Gene.01 is born as a foundational industrial platform for a family of humanoids specialized in specific use cases. For each industrial application, Generative Bionics customizes the Gene.01 platform on three levels: it derives a target-specific Physical AI model, adapts the robot’s external design to the operating context, and modifies hands and feet according to the intended use.

It is this platform model that makes production at scale possible: a common core produced in volume, from which to derive multiple humanoid robots customized for different sectors—including logistics, manufacturing, security and inspection, and healthcare—without starting from scratch each time. The collaboration with Fincantieri, a global leader in shipbuilding, represents the platform’s first industrial application: a humanoid designed for welding in the complex environments of shipyards.

Not just a robot, but a sovereign European ecosystem for Physical AI

As humanoid robotics prepares to scale globally, Generative Bionics develops its technology in Europe, placing trust, compliance and supply chain resilience at the center. The company aims to contribute to a sovereign Physical AI ecosystem, rooted in European industrial capabilities and differentiated by people-centered design, high regulatory standards and reliable supply chains.

This ambition is taking shape through a strategic partnership with Synapticon, a German company specialized in actuation systems, to develop a sovereign, EU-protected actuation stack for Generative Bionics’ line of humanoid robots, starting with Gene.01. The collaboration includes final assembly, calibration and safety testing in Europe, as well as the development of integrated actuators tailored to the platform’s mechanical, thermal and control requirements.

A unique heritage of technical and industrial expertise

Developed in just six months, Gene.01 demonstrates how deep expertise in Physical AI can rapidly transform years of scientific research into a market-ready industrial humanoid platform. The project was carried out by a team with a rare combination of humanoid robotics experience and industrial execution capability. Nearly half of Generative Bionics’ roughly 100 people hold a PhD and bring over 15 years of developments on iCub, iRonCub, ergoCub, wearable devices, teleoperation and Physical AI matured at the Italian Institute of Technology.
